Türkiye – The country’s defense industry has significantly increased its exports of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Africa and Asia, marking a strategic expansion in its geopolitical influence. In the first half of 2025, Turkish defense and aerospace exports surged by 25%, reaching $3.6 billion, with a substantial portion attributed to UAVs.
Key players in this expansion include Baykar, known for its Bayraktar TB2 and TB3 drones, and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), which produces the Anka and TF Kaan UAVs. These UAVs are gaining popularity in regions seeking cost-effective and advanced military technology.
Countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Kenya have integrated Turkish drones into their defense arsenals, enhancing their surveillance and combat capabilities. The Bayraktar TB2, in particular, has been noted for its effectiveness in various conflict zones. Indonesia and Malaysia have procured Turkish UAVs to bolster their maritime surveillance and defense systems. Indonesia’s acquisition of the TF Kaan fighter jets and Malaysia’s purchase of the Anka-S drones signify deepening defense ties between Türkiye and Southeast Asia.
Türkiye has also established itself as a global leader in unmanned systems, controlling roughly 65% of the worldwide market for both armed and unarmed UAVs since 2018. This leadership stems from advanced technologies developed by both state-owned and private Turkish firms, positioning the country as a key player in the global defense landscape.
